Itinerary

Take a morning flight from Addis to Semera. Drive to Erta Ale, a shield volcano with a permanent lava lake. Drive through challenging terrain including solidified lava, rocks, sand, and oasis. Overnight in Afdera (hotel/camping).

  • Overnight in Afdera (hotel/camping)

Pass through Lake Afdera and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes. Visit Dallol and Lake Assal, observe salt mining, camel caravans (except July–September), and walk with the Afar people. Return to Hamedela for overnight stay.

  • Excursion to Dallol (-116 m below sea level)
  • Overnight at Hamedela (hotel/camping)

Visit Lake Afrera (Lake Giuletti), a hypersaline lake fed by underground streams. Explore the unique surroundings and relax. Overnight in hotel/camping.

  • Lake surface area: 100–125 km²
  • Depth approximately 160 m

Drive back to Semera and take a flight to Addis Ababa.
